2008 NCARB Resolutions

Changes Made to Continuing Ed Requirements

On April 2, 2008 the Board voted to change the requirements for obtaining continuing education credit. These changes will apply to the current renewal cycle (2008-2009) and all registrants need to incorporate these changes into the way they obtain credit hours.

The changes include the following:
* All 24 credit hours required in this cycle must be in Public Protection, also know as Health, Safety and Welfare.
* Carry-Over hours/credits are no longer allowed. All 24 credit hours must be obtained in the current cycle.
* General Subjects credits are no longer accepted.

Registrants will receive a mailing soon containing the new rules and a new Continuing Education Report Form.

New ARE Timing Rules

On June 20, 2007 the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards held its annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.

During the meeting resolutions were discussed and voted on. One resolution, 07-8, was for the purpose of setting requirements for when it would be possible to take the national Architect Registration Examination (ARE). The membership voted to leave when one could be an exam candidate up to individual jurisdictions.

The Board has changed the rules regarding the timing of taking the ARE. One is now eligible to take the ARE after receiving a professional degree and obtaining an NCARB IDP number. It is no longer necessary to complete all, or any, of the IDP requirements. Those requirements must be completed before licensure.

New Version of the ARE in Place

A new version of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) is now active. ARE 4.0 was launched in July 2008. The new exam integrates multiple-choice questions with graphic vignettes and will have seven divisions instead of nine. Though ARE 4.0 was launched in July 2008, in order to ease candidates through the transition there will be a one year period when both ARE 3.1 and ARE 4.0 will be administered. Current candidates have until June 2009 to complete any remaining divisions of ARE 3.1.
